Washington is located at nearly the same latitude as some of the top French wine-growing regions like Bordeaux and Burgundy. For almost 150 years, vines in Washington have thrived due to sunny days and cool nights that are kind to growing grapes. The Columbia Valley is home to 50,000 acres of vines within 19 distinct AVAs. Contrary to the reputation of the Pacific Northwest, this Valley gets only six inches of rainfall oer year — as much as the Gobi Desert. This long and consistent growing season produces complex, vibrant wines. Established in 1993, Matthews Winery is located in the heart of the Woodinville Wine Country. The boutique winery is owned by a local family and focuses on maintaining production of Bordeaux-style and single varietal vineyard-designated wines. We will sample:
Sauvignon Blanc 2021 — 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Pale straw in color with aromas of starfruit, white currants, lime zest, seashells, gooseberry, meringue and hay. The initial aromas are mirrored in the flavors of this medium bodied, balanced wine with great acidity. Long finish of crisp, mouth-watering citrus, gunflint, and pomelo. 13.9% ABV. $23.99
Claret 2020 — A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (35%), Merlot (34%), and Cabernet Franc (27%), 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Malbec. With fruit coming from Horse Heaven Hills, White Bluffs, Wahluke Slope and Royal Slope, appealing aromas of green pepper, herb and fresh black fruit lead to ripe, polished, pure, decadent black-fruit flavors. It shows a lot of intensity and richness. Chocolate notes linger on the very long finish. Only 193 barrels were produced. 14.6% ABV. $34.50/$11.50
Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 — A prominent perfume of mocha and dark cherry cordial, with underlying notes of raked earth, roasted herbs, and fractured rock that balance the fruit. On the palate, a kiss of acid and supple tannin lend structure to the black plum and a faint beef dripping. Well-integrated toasted oak and red/blue fruits compliment the lengthy finish. 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 1% Malbec. Rating: 94, Wine Enthusiast. 14.5% ABV. $29.99, regularly $33.50/$10
