Battle of the Blancs (Chenin, That Is) Complimentary Tableside Wine Tasting

  • Craft'd 108 West Union Street Morganton, NC, 28655 United States (map)

Chenin Blanc originated in France's Loire Valley, likely in the Anjou subregion, which today makes the world's most acclaimed Chenins. The grape's frontiers have expanded, to South Africa, where it’s also known as Steen, as well as to some regions in the U.S., most notably California. In France, Chenins emphasize the grape's high acidity, orchard and citrus fruit flavors, and floral notes, like honeysuckle. In the New World, South Africa and California in particular, Chenin Blanc is mostly made in a dry style, but with riper, sometimes tropical fruit.

Dry Creek Vineyard Dry Chenin Blanc 2019, Clarksburg, California — Dry Creek Vineyard was the first new winery established in the Dry Creek Valley after Prohibition. At first swirl, aromatics of passionfruit, lime and candied lemon spring forward from the glass with notes of orange blossom, jasmine and melon. On the palate, the wine is refreshing with flavors of lemon curd, mango and passionfruit with hints of hibiscus. The mouthfeel is lively but rich, with a voluptuous texture. 100% stainless steel fermentation guarantees the fresh fruit character that fans of this wine have come to appreciate over the years. A classic Loire Valley-style wine.

Simonsig Stellenbosch Chenin Blanc 2019, South Africa — One of the major influences on the 2019 harvest was the preceding winter which saw 70% more rainfall than the previous year - one recognized as among the driest in the history of the Cape Winelands. This wine displays a bright effervescent color with a green tinge. The expressive fruit notes bounce from passion fruit to apple and pear. Nuances of kiwi and green melon. Domaine Pichot Vouvray 2019, France — Jean-Claude Pichot’s family is one of the oldest in Vouvray, with origins as viticulturists dating back to 1739. Pale straw with silver and gold reflections throughout. On the nose, poached quince, sliced Golden Delicious apple, and Bosc pear complement jasmine, wet river rocks, and chalky white soil. The sleek mouthfeel is clean with a kiss of stone fruit sweetness, juicy yellow plum, and nectarine. The mineral tones persist all the way through the finish and leave your palate feeling refreshed and weightless. Drink now - 2027.
