Bordered by the Barossa Valley to the North and McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek to the South, the Adelaide Hills is the cool-climate jewel at the center of South Australia’s wine country. It is Australia's most vibrant cool climate wine region, and with over 90 wine labels and 50 cellar doors, it is acknowledged internationally for its distinctive premium wines, viticulture and stunning scenery.
Mt Yengo was created to acknowledge and highlight the culture and values of the First Nations People of Australia — Aboriginal Australians — and to meld these qualities into the recent wine culture. The winery has worked to create not only a wine brand, but a community entered around wine that bridges the cultural divide, instilling cultural understanding, and embracing reconciliation and diversity to assist in "Closing the Gap" between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.
Mt Yengo has always featured Aboriginal art on its labels and includes their artists in the commercial success of the winery. The winery donates a portion of its proceeds from each bottle sold to its artists and also gives a portion to the National Indigenous Culinary Institute, which is a program of national significance to create highly skilled Indigenous chefs.
We will sample:
Pinot Gris 2021 — The nose is high-toned and expressive with aromatics of ripe green pear, white nectarine, apricot, quandong (a native red peach), mushroom, and lemon myrtle. The palate is textural and bright, with creamy lees-derived chalkiness and a persistent acidity. Crisp and balanced. 12% ABV. $27.50/$9
Shiraz 2020 — Aromatics of ripe raspberry, Davidson plum (a native sour plum), and blackberry combine with more savory elements of mountain pepper, bush tomato, and anise myrtle. The palate is soft, ripe, and has immense depth of expression without sacrificing freshness and vitality. The oak aging comes through as complexity, broadness, and a gentle spice note. 14% ABV. $27.50/$9
See you Friday!
