Valencia is a province located at the center of Spain's sunny east coast, perhaps better known for oranges (and paella) than wine. Archaeological evidence suggests that winemaking in Valencia dates back more than a thousand years, but the region has never held a particularly prominent place on the world wine map. In the modern era, Valencia's wine production has focused more on quality than quantity.
Tucked behind the Serra Grossa, at the top of the Alrorins-Alcusses valley, is the rural idyl of Celler del Roure, an estate developed by Pablo Calatuyud to shine a light on a more ancient and authentic style of Valencian wine and away from the bulk production the area was becoming more recognized for. His intention to rehabilitate long-forgotten grapes such as Mando, Arcos, and Verdil was solidified with the discovery of a 500-year-old cellar on the mountainside property, with subterranean clay amphoras ‘tinajas’ in near perfect condition. Pablo describes the affinity of ancient grapes and amphora as nothing short of magical. “They need each other,” he explains. Pablo has realized that these indigenous grapes are worth saving and, when treated properly, can create wines of wonderful quality, freshness and concentration. We will sample:
Celler del Roure Cullerot Blanco 2022 — A medium lemon-yellow color. On the nose, this Blanco is reminiscent of a white rioja with a salty tang. It is a little waxy and offers a mix of lemon/lime fruit and peel and white plum, with a saline minerality. The palate is medium bodied with excellent acidity paired with ripe fruit and mineral notes. Long and fresh on the finish. Cullerot, which means tadpole, is made in an old cellar utilizing heirloom and indigenous varieties: 50% Macabeo, 15% Verdil, 15% Malvasía, 10% Pedro Ximénez, and 10% other. Rating: 93, Wine Advocate. 13% ABV. $24.50/8
Celler del Roure Les Alcusses Tinto 2018 — Blend of Monastrell, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Light cherry in color with spicy aromas of fruit preserves and red berry. Fruity, balanced, and slightly dry with soft tannins. 14.5% ABV. $21.50/7
