Brady wines are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation, and part of winemaker Don Brady’s a continuing adventure with wine. Nestled in the Estrella Valley, Brady Vineyard is just far enough inland from the Pacific Ocean to build heat daily, but still close enough to enjoy the nightly cooling of maritime breezes. Established in 2001, the 24-acre site is ideally situated for world-class viticulture, with vines rooted in the gravelly soils that form a rolling alluvial terrace overlooking the Estrella River. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petite Sirah vines are planted at a density of 908 vines per acre, grafted onto rootstock and bred to seek out available water and nutrients in the sparse ground. Because of the inherent poverty of the site, yields are limited to a scant four tons per acre, boosting intensity and concentration from the vines. All of these elements together result in rich, fully ripened grapes, ideal for producing big and bold Paso Robles red wines. We will taste:
Chardonnay 2019 — Ripe white peach, daffodil, apple blossom, poached pear and plumeria aromas show on the clean and full nose of this bottling. Those floral and white fruit flavors feature strongly on the sip too, but the racy acidity and a linear tension keeps everything in check, finishing on a hint of coconut oil. Rating: 90, Wine Enthusiast, $24.99/$9
Zinfandel 2019 — A pomegranate red with intense aromas of cherries and blackberries and black pepper on a spicy backdrop. This is an intense, fresh and fruity wine with well-balanced tannins and pleasing minerality, reflecting all the simplicity and ingenuity of its namesake. 2018 Rating: 96, Wine Enthusiast, $26.99/$9
Petite Sirah 2018 — This wine begins with dense and dark aromas of blueberry, black currant and violet on the opulent nose. It's tarry on the palate, combining those black fruits with purple flowers and charcoal. Firm tannins ensure a long life. Drink through 2033. Rating: 91, Wine Enthusiast, $24.99/$9
As always, feel free to bring snacks/dinner with you, but please dispose of your own trash (there is a trash can at the back entrance). St. Lucio’s Gourmet and Cheese is open inside the store for your cheese needs.
