Monte Rio Cellars is the brainchild of longtime sommelier Patrick Cappiello who enjoyed an immensely successful career in New York City’s restaurant world before moving to California. After a combined 30 years as a sommelier and in the restaurant industry, and receiving prestigious awards, including "Sommelier of the Year 2014" by Food & Wine Magazine, "Wine Person of the Year 2014" by Imbibe Magazine, and "Sommelier of the Year 2015" by Eater National, he naturally turned to winemaking. The name Monte Rio is two-fold: it pays homage to the historic and iconic California town that thrived in the 30s, 40s, and 50s; and is a nod to the “throwback” style of wines that would have been commonly produced in the area during the same time period that the town was thriving.
We will taste:
Mendocino 2021 Chardonnay — A balanced representation of California Chardonnay, more akin to the heyday of Cali Chard in the mid to late 70s. Grapes come from the Hawkeye vineyard in Redwood Valley AVA in Mendocino. The climate is cooler than surrounding AVAs due to a gap in the coastal ridge which allows cool Pacific air currents to reach it. Sitting at 800 meters above sea level, this area experiences significant diurnal temperature variation. Soils are thin, rocky and rich in iron. This wine is delicate and chalky with white flower aromas. Fresh and fruit forward, with tropical undertones and a zesty finish. 12.5% ABV. Only 250 cases produced. $24.99/$8.50
Lodi 2020 Zinfandel — Fruit is sourced from the organically farmed Shergill Vineyard in Lodi AVA. The average vine age is 90 years. Fermentation in concrete and stainless steel before maturing for 10 months in neutral French oak. Pure fruit with medium body and waves of black cherry, forest, herbs, pomegranate and plum with superb acidity keeping the wine lively and fresh. 13% ABV. $24.99/$8.50.
See you Friday!
