Gai’a Notios White 2019 (Peleponnese, Greece) — One of the pioneers of the modern Greek wine revolution, Gaia Estate was established in 1994 by Greek winemakers Leon Karatsalos and Yiannis Paraskevopoulos. Operating two different wineries they make cutting-edge wines in both Nemea and Santorini. Notios White (AKA “The Southerner” in Greek) is produced from two pink-skin indigenous varietals: Moschofilero and Roditis. Moschofilero is sourced from the Arcadian plateaus in the Mantinia region of Peloponnese, at an altitude of 1,500 feett. In this cool climate, the pink-skinned Moschofilero thrives, developing intense, spicy and floral aromatics and crisp acidity. The Roditis comes from vineyards located on the Corinthian slopes; the ideal environment for producing grapes with elegance and a smooth, lemony character. $19.99/$8
J Portugal Ramos Reserva Red 2018 (Alentejo, Portugal) — João Portugal Ramos is Portugal’s most famous winemaker. He almost single-handedly opened Portuguese winemaking to the benefits of modern technologies with an emphasis on low yields, occasional oak aging, and the preservation of a grape’s natural fruit flavors. In 1990, he startee creating his own wine and he began planting vineyards in Alentejo around his new winery, Vila Santa. His 1,250 acres of vineyard are located near the ancient marble-filled town of Estremoz in Alentejo. The schist and limestone-clay soil, combined with the region’s Continental climate, create ideal conditions for growing grapes. Ramos’s wines quickly met critical acclaim, This Reserva is an unoaked southern blend of indigenous Trincadeira, Aragonez, and a touch of Syrah; dry yet juicy and aromatic. Ruby red in color, this wine displays aromas of ripe red fruit and dried herbs. It is soft and robust with complex tannins. On the palate, the wine is spicy with a long finish. Bright plums and dried figs with a tobacco edge; lovely and fresh on the palate with a lingering finish. While it is rich, this wine is also elegant. Ripe tannins are effortlessly integrated with the blackberry fruits, maturing structure and juicy aftertaste. Drink from 2021. $16.99/$7
Renato Ripassa 2017 (Veneto, Italy) — A blend of Corvina, Rondinella, and Oseleta, this wine is closely connected to the greatest wine of Valpolicella: Amarone. After pressing the dried grapes from which Amarone is made, the Valpolicella wine is passed over the still warm marc of Amarone. A second alcoholic fermentation begins which increases the alcoholic content and the wine becomes richer in color, bouquet. Ripasso literally means “repassed” and is made by macerating fresh Valpolicella on the pressed grape skins of Amarone. As a result, a Ripasso will have more depth and complexity compared to a regular Superiore but is more approachable than an Amarone. This baby-Amarone is loaded with silky-smooth, sultry dark cherry fruits and dark chocolate, with a lingering rounded finish. Full-bodied and dense. $32.99/$13
