Lindquist Family Wines are made by master winemaker Bob Lindquist, who specializes in crafting balanced, elegant Rhone grape varietal wines and Chardonnay from the best cool climate vineyard sites on the Central Coast in Santa Barbara. The production is small and focused and produces wines with great finesse. One of California’s original Rhone Rangers, Bob specializes in Syrah, Grenache, Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Mourvédre and Chardonnay from exceptional cool climate and coastal vineyards.
(The Rhone Rangers are a group of American winemakers who promote the use of grape varieties from the Rhône Valley. They are mostly based on the West Coast, particularly California, and have created a not-for-profit organization for the promotion of wines containing at least 75% of the 22 Rhône grape varieties.)
We will sample:
Bien Nacido Chardonnay 2020 — 100% Chardonnay from the Bien Nacido Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. Classic SMV Chardonnay characteristics — pears, apples, and hints of citrus and minerals, all cloaked with sweet French oak. The flavors are straightforward and approachable. In 2020 (and again in 2021), the grapes came entirely from Block L — one of the oldest Chardonnay blocks, planted in 1973. 13.5% ABV. $27/$9
Central Coast Syrah 2019 — 90% Syrah, 4% Grenache, 4% Mourvedre and 2% Graciano, blended from vineyards in both Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. Most of the grapes are from Biodynamic or organic sources. The winery has been making a version of this wine every year since 1982. The goal is to make a savory, drinkable-style wine with good acidity and balance and that can easily go with many different kinds of food. Bob says this wine “is not meant to put down in the cellar. It has the structure that would allow aging, but is bottled with a screw cap for easy access and ultimate drinkability.” 13.5% ABV. $30.50/$10
Central Coast GSM 2020 — 52% Grenache, 24% Syrah, 24% Mourvedre from vineyards in cool climate zones on the Central Coast. Grenache driven with that juicy, red fruit core. This is supplemented with the spiciness and earthiness from the Syrah and Mourvedre. Bob says, “This is very much a ‘drink me now’ wine, but certainly has the stuffing and balance to be aged for a while.” 13.5% ABV. $27/$9
