Come and be a green hero! Organic or “green” wines can fall anywhere under the organic umbrella, including biodynamic and organically grown. These wines are strictly regulated and meet certain standards set by governing bodies that consider the good of the environment. Celebrate the Irish heritage you have (or have for the day), and do something to help the planet.
Ireland’s wine production is very limited, so we will take St. Patty’s around the world. We will taste:
Loimer Lois Gruner Veltliner 2021, Austria — Fred Loimer’s wines are among the very best examples of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in Austria. He began practicing biodynamics in 2006 and is a founding member of Respekt, a certifying body for biodynamic viticulture. Grüner Veltliner is the signature grape of Austria. This Velt is dry with savory aromas, spicy flavors, and good acidity. Fresh tasting with notes of green apple, lemon, radish, and arugula. Lois (rhyming with “choice”) is named after the village of Langenlois and was one of the first high-quality examples of Grüner Veltliner to be exported to international markets in 1999. 100% estate grown fruit in Lower Austria. 12% ABV. $21.99/$7.50.
Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico 2020, Tuscany, Italy — Respect for biodiversity, for the health of the workers and for the environment are the cornerstones from which Badia a Coltibuono Chianti Classico is born. In the heart of the Sienese part of Chianti Classico, Sangiovese grapes are harvested from small quantities. The color is bright ruby, the nose unveils layers of iris, violet, tobacco, black pepper and marasca cherry. The taste is well balanced, tightly knit with supple tannins, mineral notes, a mouth cleansing fresh acidity. Warm and persistent. 14% ABV. $29.99/$10
Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Les Deux Albions 2020, Rhone, France — Ripe and polished yet fresh, this red offers anise, vanilla-laced blackberry and cherry flavors, then turns dark and brooding on the palate, with smoldering iron, garrigue, menthol, black pepper and dark earth framed by fine-grained tannins. Blend: 50% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 5% Clairette. Chateau de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the appellation’s benchmark wines. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the chateau. Henri and Claude Barruol took over in 1957 and gradually moved Saint Cosme away from the bulk wine business. Henri was one of the first in the region to work organically beginning in the 1970s. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992, making a dramatic shift to quality, adding a négociant arm to the business in 1997, and converting to biodynamics in 2010. 15.3% ABV. $29.99/$10.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!
