Madfish Unwooded Chardonnay 2019 — Madfish Bay is located in the remote southern corner of Western Australia. The bay's tranquility is broken when two tides meet. According to local folklore, the fish, confused by this natural phenomenon, can be observed leaping in the air as if in a state of complete madness. The MadFish label, first released in 1992, was named as an homage to this unique geographical occurrence. This unwooded Chard is fermented in stainless steel and is a blend of several regions across South Western Australia. Each region delivers fruit with different flavor profiles that contribute beautifully to the final blend. Each parcel is fermented separately to allow the winemakers the challenge each year of blending each batch to find the right balance of fruit weight and consistent style. The wine displays a pale straw color with a green hue tint. Melon and peach aromas mingle with tropical fruits, and underlying zesty citrus notes. The palate is generous and lively, boasting a powerful fruit punch and balanced fine acidity. A well rounded, bright, vivacious wine with juicy fruit freshness, a fine texture, and generous length. $18.99/$7
Pikes Traditionale Clare Valley Dry Riesling 2019 — The Pike family have been making hand crafted beverages in South Australia for five generations. Notes of bright citrus such as lime, lemon and fresh-cut apple. Wax, kerosene, flower blossoms and honey lead into a bone-dry palate that's fruit-driven, steering it away from overt austerity. Tangy fruit, crunchy acidity, a slippery texture and a mouthwatering finish. Spotlessly clean, it displays the clarity and purity of Clare Valley Riesling from a high-quality vintage. Drink now through 2028. Rating: 93, Wine Enthusiast. $25.99/$9
Howard Park Flint Rock Syrah 2017 — Howard Park is one of Western Australia’s pioneering family-owned wineries, specializing in the state’s premier grape-growing regions of Margaret River and the Great Southern. Encompassing a 30+ year history and overseen by two generations of the Burch family, Howard Park is a multi-regional endeavor which has included the selection, acquisition and development of four exceptional estate vineyards across both regions. The winery is led by legendary winemaker and winner of the 2018 Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine ‘Winemaker of the Year’, Janice McDonald. This Syrah is inky ruby/deep garnet in appearance. Lush plums and black cherry fruit seasoned with pepper, spice, vanilla and mocha greet the nose. Lively on the palate, the wine is dense and redolent of blackberry, plum and cherry, laced with licorice, cocoa and a touch of smoky bacon. The mouthfeel and texture is rich, velvety and supple with well-knit tannins. This is a savory example of the variety for Australia. Rating: 92, Vinuous. $25.99/$9
