Bubbles from Around the World! This is a sampling from the Bubbles Tasting earlier this month. We will sample:
Gusbourne Brut Reserve 2016, Kent, England — The original Gusbourne Estate in Appledore, Kent, dates back to 1410. The de Goosebourne family crest was made up of three geese; today, each and every bottle of wine crafted at Gusbourne carries a contemporary goose crest in honor of its heritage. In 2004, Andrew Weeber took over the estate with a single goal: to create English sparkling wines that would stand up alongside the very finest offerings from across the globe. The grapes for this Brut are sourced solely from Gusbourne vineyards. Deep gold, dark and rich, with a delicate mousse and persistent perfume of honeyed green apples with hints of lemon, white peach and toasted nuts. The palate is fruit driven, with red apples, poached pears and bright red berry fruit. It displays subtle flavors of peach and toasty notes of freshly baked bread, roasted nuts and apple pie. Round finish.
Blend: 40% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Meunier, 27% Pinot Noir. $54.99/$18
Graham Beck Brut Rosé NV, Robertson, South Africa— Graham Beck Estate is situated in the breathtaking Breede River Valley, only ten kilometers from the town of Robertson and an easy drive from Cape Town. As early as the 1970s, the Robertson area became acknowledged in the industry for its unique terroir – similar to that of the revered Champagne region in France. This locale has the potential to produce world-class sparkling wine. The exceptional climate, combined with the rich limestone soils produce wines with universal appeal and star quality. Made from the traditional Méthode Cap Classique base wines of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, its unique silver-pink hue is obtained by an enzymatic reaction during the transport of the Pinot Noir fruit to the cellar. The fine, lively mousse is brisk on the palate, showing hints of oyster shell, fresh lavender and subtle hints of berry and cherry. $22.99/$8
Fitz Ritter Durkheimer Sekt Riesling, Pfalz, Germany — Fitz-Ritter is a renowned Palatinate (Pfalz) wine estate that has been in the Fitz family for nine generations, since its founding over 230 years ago. One of Germany ’s oldest sparkling wine (Sekt) productions is also part of this family operation. This sparkling Riesling is full-bodied with ripe aromas of apricot and grapefruit. Fragrant notes of yellow cherry, blossom and pink grapefruit. Dry in style and silky on the palate, it offers concentrated citrus flavors edged by hints of bitter lime pith and a deep mineral undertone. $22.99/$8
