The Elgin Valley is one of the more intensively farmed districts of South Africa and produces 60% of the national apple crop. Up until the 1980s, Elgin (about 70km southeast of Capetown) was renowned as the apple basket of the Western Cape, the fruit thriving in the cold winter and moderate summer conditions and the verdant orchards adding to Elgin’s aesthetic appeal as an admired part of the Cape’s natural splendor. However a shift in economic focus led to Elgin also becoming one of South Africa's most notable and successful wine regions, with the coolest climate of any region in the country. Elgin wines and tourism have consequently become significant parts of the valley's economy. Wines from the region have won several international awards.
The Clüver family pioneered viticulture and winemaking in this unique region of South Africa and were the first to plant grapes there 35 years ago. Paul Clüver spent much of his childhood on the farm, and after graduating from the University of Stellenbosch with degrees in horticulture and economy, he has overseen Paul Clüver becoming one of South Africa’s leading wineries. We will sample:
