Fable 053: The Farmer’s Sons. A story of brothers, whom, by working together, learn more than they planned, and gain more than they hoped.
The Fableist is a collaboration between winemakers Curt Schalchlin and Andrew Jones. Curt, owner and vintner of the heralded winery Sans Liege, is known for his critically acclaimed Rhone varietal wines. Andrew, winemaker of Field Recordings, spends his days planning and planting vineyards and has stood foot in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast. Together, they produce The Fableist, a collaboration that gives special attention to the craft and story behind each wine. Each bottle has been artfully designed and inspired by one of Aesop’s many fables. Just as each of his timeless vignettes has a moral, the two winemakers believe that every blend has its own story to tell, its own lessons to teach.
“There’s something profound about wine; it can inspire, bring loved ones together, fill hearts with warmth. As you enjoy each glass, we hope these stories spark a desire to ponder what really matters in life — and may they encourage you to find the wisdom within yourself.”
We will sample:
Chardonnay 2021, Fable 163: The Honey Bee and Jupiter — “By Jupiter's decree, we sacrifice these grapes to create a wine that's bright as lightening and smooth like honey. Though tempting to keep this wine for yourself, seek out those with whom to share it with. For generosity can leave a taste far richer than greed.” Aromas of honeydew melon, cantaloupe and orange zest on the nose with hints of creme fraîche and lemon meringue on the palate. 100% Chardonnay. 12.6% ABV. $25.99/$8.50
Merlot 2021, Fable 395: The Snake, The Eagle and The Farmer — “Life’s road may wind unfairly, and serpents may lie in wait for do-gooders and villains alike, but The Fableist believes good deeds deserve reward and will always offer grateful grapes to worthy wanderers. Pay it forward. You do good because it’s the right thing to do, but we also have the hope that it’s contagious. In life and business, the more good that people do, the better things will be, and maybe it will come back around.” This Merlot has a classic claret character. Notes of black tea, northland blueberries and wet concrete. The silky texture slides across the palate leaving behind hints of sweet plums, warm cedar planks, and freshly ground spices. 92% Merlot, 8% Petite Sirah. 13.9% ABV. $25.99/$8.50
Cabernet Sauvignon 2021, Fable 373: The Ant and The Cicada — “Now accept the gift of the Fableist, which has been toiled and moiled over in an attempt to give both weary ants and shiftless cicadas peace of mind, and a belly full of warmth.” Vibrant black currant, cedar and vanilla hit your tongue, as you're warmed by the comforts of blackberries and cherries. A strong finish. 95% Cabernet Sauvignon 3% Merlot 2% Malbec. 14.2% ABV. $29.50/$10.
