Martin and Carmen Moser have been cultivating the vineyards at Weingut Hermann Moser since 2002; however, their family-owned estate dates back nearly 400 years. It is located in the heart of Austria’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling stronghold: the region Kremstal. The vineyards cover 19 hectares and are the best vineyards in Rohrendorf, a little village just east of the historic Krems along the Danube River 80 kilometers from Vienna. About 85% of the surface is planted with white varieties such as Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Welschriesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gelber Muskateller and Pinot Blanc; the remainder with Zweigelt. Martin is a member of the Traditionsweingüter Österreich Association (Traditional Austrian Wineries Association). The association was founded in 1992 and is composed of 23 growers who have together created a single level classification of 52 of their best single vineyards in the four Danube regions (Kremstal, Kamptal, Traisental and Wagram).
We will taste:
Gebling Grüner Veltliner 2022 — Light yellow green color with silver reflections. Fine herbal and savory notes pair with delicate hints of Golden Delicious apples, a touch of orange zest, cardamom, and quince. Juicy and elegant, with fine acidity. Minerally and salty with a bit of apple, some blossom honey, savory finish. The Gebling vineyard at Weingut Hermann Moser is said to be one of the most unique types of loess soil in Europe. The name Gebling originates from ‘Gelb-ling' (yellowish) and refers to the unique ochre color of the soil from this vineyard. The Gebling terraces, located right behind the cellar, are said to produce exceptionally spicy Grüner Veltliners. 13% ABV. $21/$7
Kellerterrassen Riesling DAC Reserve 2015 — This DAC is qualified as the 'polished achiever' for receiving consistent high scores and awards. Golden hues with aromas of delicate pineapple, passion fruit, and a hint of lime zest. Juicy with hints of stone fruits and a subtle sweetness, this wine is complex with plenty of extract. This Riesling will only improve with age, 25 years or more, if stored in good conditions. 13% ABV. $45/$15
Zweigelt Red 2019 — This classic-style Zweigelt shows a clear garnet color, shading from a dark center to a clear edge. Tart cherries and cranberries on the nose, leading to black fruit on the palate. Made without oak, it’s light bodied, bright, crisp and acidic. Tannic astringency and stony minerality linger in a long finish. Serve with a slight chill. 13% ABV. $17.99/$6
