France is the source of many grape varieties (such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah) that are now planted throughout the world, as well as wine-making practices and styles of wine that have been adopted in other wine-producing countries. We will sample:
Renaud Pouilly-Fuissé 2020, Burgundy — 100% Chardonnay. Domaine Renaud is a small operation in the town of Puissé. Their cellar is modern and they use upright ovals for many of the wines, stainless steel for others. They have a clean and fresh style, with citrus and stone fruit profiles, zippy acidity, and a minerality that comes from their humble terroir. The 2020 PF has an attractive nose of candied lemon and fresh almond leading to a solid, medium body and a satisfying balance of restrained, flinty acidity and some fine tannin, the latter giving it good length. 13.5% ABV. $32/10.50
Roi des Pierres Sancerre Rose 2022, Loire — Pinot Noir. The Loire Valley is the historical heart of France, renowned for its beautiful countryside, breathtaking chateaux and legendary wine. From the 10th century onwards, kings and queens have called it their home, promoting intellectual and cultural advancements. This rosé of Pinot Noir is salmon in color; straightforward with a nose of red cherry, rose petal and white blossom. Raspberry fruits and light tannins; gently textured and ready to drink.
